One of the ways to obtain Maltese citizenship is through direct investment. Typically, this investment is made by purchasing shares in a business, investing in real estate, starting a new company, or contributing to a national development fund.
The investment required for citizenship through this route is non-refundable and is evaluated by the government agency that handles citizenship by investment applications, known as the Community Malta Agency. The process includes background checks, verification of the source of funds, and any other relevant information to ensure the selection of the best candidates.
General requirements for applying for Maltese citizenship through investment:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be a national of a country outside the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland.
- Have no criminal record.
- Pass the due diligence process.
- Not come from or have close ties to a sanctioned country.
- Meet the minimum investment requirements.
To obtain citizenship through investment, the minimum investment must be 600,000 EUR or 640,000 EUR if 36 months of residency in Malta have been completed. After residing in the country for 12 months, this investment should be between 750,000 and 800,000 EUR. This is considered the principal investment. Additionally, applicants must purchase a property valued at least 700,000 EUR in Malta, to be maintained for at least 5 years, or rent a property with an annual rent of 16,000 EUR, also for a minimum of 5 years. A donation of 10,000 EUR must also be made to a Maltese organization approved by the Community Malta Agency.
An additional 53,000 EUR must be paid for each additional applicant.
Additional requirements to consider:
It’s important to highlight that before making the mentioned investments, a residence permit must first be obtained, costing 10,000 EUR. Additionally, between 5,000 and 5,300 EUR must be paid for application fees, and 21.50 to 29.30 EUR for the issuance of the residence card.
Subsequently, an eligibility application for citizenship must be submitted within 12 months of the residence card's issuance. This will cost 15,000 EUR, plus 1,000 EUR in administrative fees. If this application is approved, an additional 500 EUR must be paid. Finally, after meeting all the prior requirements, the required investments are made, allowing the applicant to take the Oath of Allegiance and acquire citizenship.
